South Africa, after facing severe economic challenges during Covid-19 pandemic, introduced a Social Relief of Distress grant offered by SASSA to help the people during the pandemic state. The step is taken by the organisation to make sure they can get financial assistance to meet the basic necessities of life. It was introduced in 2012 and was a temporary measure to help the people but it became financial support and currently is supporting more than 8 million unemployed people in South Africa.
What is the future of the R 350 grant in 2025?
Whether it will be extended further or the grant will be replaced by some other alternative?
There is this ongoing concern and debate about the grant’s future in South Africa currently!
From our resources, we have got to know that the South African government has confirmed the SRD grant extension until March 2025. The decision is made in response to ongoing economic and financial challenges faced by the government and people of South Africa and the slow recovery from covid-19 pandemic state. You can check the future R350 at https://srd-sassa-gov.co.za/.
The extension confirmation is taken from the statements of president Cyril Ramaphosa. The decision shows the concern of the South African government to support the nation’s vulnerable individuals in the best possible way. On the other hand, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana also stated in his medium term budget policy that,
“The extension of the SRD grant until March 2025 will ensure that the vulnerable can continue to count on this crucial support during these challenging times.”
Any Possibility For Another Extension After March, 2025?
We cannot predict the possibility or chances of another extension after March 2025. Whether it will continue after 2025 or not, this depends totally upon the amendments in the current budget plans and how the South African government finds new ways to get more money for beneficiaries.
For now R 33.6 billion is set aside for Social Relief of Distress grants for the current year. Moreover, the grant has been increased from R 350 to R 370. This increase also has impacted the budget significantly. Although the increase is only 5.7%, it has significantly impacted the life of needy individuals and helped them positively to make their life better.
Will There Be a Replacement Of the SRD Grant With Basic Income Grant, BIG?
The South African government is currently considering basic income grants, BIG and is looking for ways to implement it in their country. There are chances that a basic income grant may replace the SRD grant. This is because the Basic Income Grant is comparatively a long term solution and more sustainable than Social Relief Of Distress Grant.
Moreover, the Basic Income Grant is also more reliable when it comes to solutions for unemployment and poverty. But we cannot say that the Basic Income Grant will replace the SRD grant with surety because the discussions, negotiations and policy formations are still going on and the agency has not yet made any final decision.
There are high chances that the SRD, Social Relief Of Distress Grant in 2025 will be replaced by Basic Income Grant, BIG because most of the political parties and public groups have supported the idea of implementation of Basic Income Grant.
But because the implementation of BIG involves complex measures and financial implications, the government should take the decision with proper concentration and focus. They should be careful when initiating the implementation of the plan.
Moreover, BIG will only get successful if it provides significant financial safety to economically vulnerable needy and poor South Africans. Until now what we are aware of is that R 350 has been increased to R 370 and the beneficiaries for eligible individuals who are eligible to get R 370 SRD grant from SASSA can receive their grants until March 2025.
We will get to know about the exact future of the Social Relief of Distress R 370 grant in the upcoming year and not before that. For your information, there are high chances that the SRD grant would come to an end in a few months, in 2025 because the government is not considering extending it further, instead is considering replacing it with a Basic Income Grant BIG.
