Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) covers multiple developmental conditions that arise from differences in brain structure and function, some of which are linked to genetics.

The causes of others are largely unknown.

Early Signs

ASD is generally identified by difficulties in social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and/or unique patterns in learning or movement.

These traits affect daily activities.

People without ASD may sometimes also show similar behaviors.

Symptoms of ASD can show up before a child’s third birthday and usually last throughout life.

As they grow, some symptoms might become less noticeable.

Children with ASD may need medical help for related issues such as anxiety, depression, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – all more common in those with ASD.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing ASD is difficult because there is no single test that can confirm it.

For a diagnosis, doctors have to carefully observe behavior and development.

The timing of the diagnosis is very important – the sooner, the better.

Some kids get their diagnosis by the age of two, but most individuals may not be diagnosed until much later.

Treatment

Treatment focuses on reducing symptoms that hinder daily life.

Because ASD presents differently in each person, treatment plans are highly personalized. It may involve a team of specialists.

At Whole Wellness Services, we use DSM-5 criteria, emphasizing difficulties in communication and repetitive behaviors.

We also use the Cognoa ASD Diagnosis Aid to help identify developmental challenges early.

Genetic testing may also be part of our extensive evaluation process to differentiate ASD from similar conditions.

We are dedicated to helping individuals with ASD get the support they need to succeed.

In Rochester, NY, Whole Wellness Services provides a broad spectrum of care, with mental health counseling, functional medicine, and integrative therapies. The focus is on personalized treatment, making use of both conventional and alternative approaches to improve physical and emotional health.
